Steve Smith is back to his best - he really is. There was a brief phase for a year or two where Smith struggled to score runs, but here he is, notching up daddy hundreds. Smith found his lost form in the Gabba Test against India where he scored a brilliant century.
He followed it up with another hundred in Melbourne. Smith played a few games for Sydney Sixers in BBL and smashed a century against Perth Scorchers before returning to the Test team and smashing back to back hundreds against Sri Lanka in Galle. Smith now has 36 Test hundreds to his name, with four of them coming in the last five Tests.
He is now only behind Ricky Ponting (41) in the list of most Test hundreds by an Australian. The conditions were not easy to bat in the second Test vs Sri Lanka, but Smith played a magnificent inning of 131. he got plenty of support from Alex Carey who was his unconventional best, sweeping, reverse-sweeing the spinners, and notched up a brilliant hundred.
Carey's score of 156 is the highest by an Australian wicketkeeper in Sri Lanka, going past Adam Gilchrist's 144. Smith became the first player in the world to add 200 run partnership with 11 players.
The record was previously held by Ricky Ponting, who stitched 200-run partnership with 10 players. Also, the 259 Partnership runs between Smith and Carey is the highest fourth-wicket partnership by a visiting pair in Sri Lanka, going past the 258 partnership by Michael Hussey and Shaun Marsh in Pallekele in 2011. Meanwhile, the partnership helped Australia post 414 in response to Sri Lanka's first -innings score of 257.
