Steve McManaman has no doubt that Liverpool can last the distance with Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title. The Reds have made a storming start to the season under new head coach Arne Slot and went five points clear at the summit on Saturday night after they beat Aston Villa 2-0 and the champions slipped up against Brighton . Liverpool were not expected to challenge for the title this term after the departure of Jurgen Klopp in the summer - but Slot's fine start to life at Anfield has seen them emerge as bonafide contenders .

McManaman saw his old club put Unai Emery 's side to the sword courtesy of goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah . And he reckons that the squad already boast the necessary experience of challenging for major honours to ensure they don't slip away as the season goes on. He told TNT Sports: "This group of players have been long into a campaign, some of them have won the Premier League and the Champions League so of course they can sustain it.

"If they stay fit and roll that starting eleven out and the five or six from the bench then of course they will go all the way." Slot has refused to be drawn on Liverpool's title hopes despite their impressive start to the season, having won nine of their opening 11 Premier League matches. But some of his players have now started to admit the title is in their sights.

Alexis Mac Allister seemed to imply after Saturday night's match that the Reds were contenders after admitting they didn't expect to challenge for the domestic crown, while his midfield partner, Ryan Gravenberch, echoed similar sentiments. He told Match of the Day: "If you said to me before the season that we would be in this position, I would maybe not believe it.

We are in the right way now, we're doing good and we want to win every game. We just have to keep going." He added: "We are at the top of the league, five points clear and really happy with that.

It's a good position to be in." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
