Adolescence is a new series on Netflix and stars Stephen Graham as the father of a 13-year-old boy accused of murder. The cast spoke about the impact it had on them Recently landing on Netflix, Adolescence features Stephen Graham as Eddie Miller, playing the role of a father in turmoil, whose 13 year old son is accused of a chilling murder. Owen Cooper portrays Jamie, the youth facing the grim accusation.
This gripping series dives into the damaging effects of social media and the digital era's pressures on today's youth. It sheds light on the escalating issue of toxic masculinity that warps the perception of young boys and identifies the ways misogyny is proliferated by online male communities. To preserve the well-being of young actor Owen amidst the intense themes, the production had robust measures in place, including an on-set child psychologist, a chaperone, and a tutor.
Owen's parents were also a constant presence during shooting. Director Philip Barantini expressed the care taken with Owen: "There was a lot of checking in with Owen after rehearsals and filming, especially of the more difficult scenes," he mentioned. "But at times when the rest of us were in tears I'd say, 'Where's Owen? Is he ok?' And he'd be upstairs playing swing ball with his chaperone.
He was one of the most amazingly balanced and talented actors I've ever worked with." Stephen Graham confessed that the emotionally charged drama often brought tears, not only to him but to the entire team involved. He fervently wishes for the audience to be deeply affected - to shed tears, find moments to smile, and above all, to reflect, reports the Mirror .
"If we achieve that, we'll have done what we set out to do," he stated. Reflecting sentimentally, he added, "Adolescence was a 'we' experience rather than a 'me' experience. And it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever been a part of.
“You have to remember that I was a young working class kid who came from a block of flats in Liverpool so it’s a big thing for me now to be able to see all these amazing people doing all these incredible things from this tiny little concept that came from my head and grew into this drama that we’re all so proud of.” Owen, now 15, confessed that while the storyline didn't faze him, there was one instance where he felt overwhelmed. He recalled: "I did get a bit overwhelmed in one of the rehearsals.
I had to step off set a minute because I was like, 'What am I doing?' I was like, 'I've never done that before.' "And Phil came out and sat with me and we talked about it, but you know, the scenes where Jamie gets angry in episode three were definitely my favourite scenes to do." He credited his on-set child psychologist and chaperones for providing support when needed, saying: "It sounds a little odd saying this, because it's a dark story, but I absolutely loved the whole process of making Adolescence.
"Yes, it was tiring at times, but the people around me made it such fun. I love acting and I loved the script. Really, it was the perfect job.
" Adolescence is airing on Netflix.
