Article content Stellantis mid-November revealed its new STLA Frame platform, the company’s third all-new multi-energy platform, tailored for full-size body-on-frame trucks and SUVs. The trick to this advanced platform is that it supports a range of propulsion systems, including fully electric (BEV), range-extended electric (REEV), internal-combustion, hybrid, and hydrogen powerplants. The STLA Frame aims to deliver best-in-class capabilities, Stellantis said, including up to 690 miles (1,100 km) of range in REEV configuration; or 500 miles (800 km) in a pure BEV setup.
The platform, designed to handle the heavy demands of full-size truck and SUV owners, offers a maximum towing capacity of 14,000 pounds (6,350 kg) and a payload of 2,700 pounds (1,224 kg). With 24-inch (610 mm) water-fording capability and reinforced high-strength steel construction, STLA Frame vehicles are supposed to be suited to diverse applications, including off-road and commercial use. The STLA Frame uses dual electric drive modules (EDMs) that provide standard all-wheel-drive and up to 250 kW (335 hp) of power each.
The platform’s BEV system supports liquid-cooled battery packs ranging from 159 kWh to over 200 kWh, delivering up to 500 miles (800 km) of range. In REEV configuration, a generator recharges the battery, enabling a 690-mile (1,100 km) range while maintaining the dynamic performance of electric propulsion. The 800-volt EV architecture supports DC fast-charging up to 350 kW, adding 100 miles (160 km) of range in 10 minutes.
The 400-volt configuration offers fast-charging at up to 175 kW, providing up to 50 miles (80 km) of range in the same time frame. Bi-directional charging capabilities allow vehicles to power homes, feed electricity to the grid, or charge other EVs. The platform’s structure incorporates high-strength steel for durability while reducing weight.
A reinforced center section houses the battery pack, shielding it during side impacts; while a full-length belly pan reduces aerodynamic drag. Flexible suspension designs, including those incorporating air suspension, optimize performance across varying load and terrain conditions. STLA Frame is one of four global platforms under Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategy.
The automaker plans to roll out the platform beneath its Ram and Jeep vehicles, specifically ones aimed at the North American market. This new platform is also part of Stellantis’ €50-billion (CAD$74 billion) investment into electrification over the next decade. By 2030, the company aims to achieve a 100% BEV sales mix in Europe; and 50% BEV sales for passenger cars and light trucks in the U.
