Staten Island D.A. and senator to host free shredding, electronic waste disposal event

STATEN ISLAND — Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon and state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/Southern Brooklyn) will be teaming up to host a safe document shredding and electronic waste disposal event on Saturday, Sept.

21, to help residents protect their identity and personal finances. The free event will be held in the Blessed Sacrament R.C.



Church parking lot, located at 1091 Forest Ave., in West Brighton, from 10 a.m.

to 2 p.m. It is open to the public.

Attendees are invited to bring documents and personal devices, including cell phones, tablets, laptops, hard drives, memory cards, CDs and DVDS. Printers, TVs or monitors will not be accepted. “While Staten Island remains the safest community of its size in the country, identity theft and scams continue to be some of the most common crimes impacting our neighbors and loved ones,” McMahon said in a statement promoting a similar event this past May.

m. “It is vitally important that we continue to avoid suspicious phone calls, emails and texts to prevent falling victim to these pesky con artists,’' he said. “Scammers are savvy and while my office has successfully prosecuted dozens of scammers and helped return hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution for Staten Island scam victims, prevention remains the strongest tool in combatting these lowly larcenists.
