State to host first international agriculture hackathon in Pune

Pune: State govt has announced the country's first International Agriculture Hackathon aimed at driving innovation and technology-led transformation in the agriculture sector. The event is scheduled to be held from June 1-3, 2025, in Pune. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar inaugurated the official website of the hackathon.

Pawar emphasised that the initiative would provide opportunities to innovative researchers while giving a promising direction for the progress of the state's agriculture sector. "The country's economy is based on agriculture and agro-based industries. This hackathon will be an important step in finding modern and technical solutions to the problems in the farm sector," Pawar said, highlighting the need for technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) to empower Maharashtra's farmers.



The event is supported by the state's department of agriculture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth and College of Agriculture, Pune. Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi, who serves as the convener of the hackathon, said, "This hackathon is a step toward integrating technology with agriculture. We aim to empower young minds to create scalable solutions that support farmers, improve productivity, and ensure food security.

" The hackathon will bring together stakeholders from industries and govt, along with young innovators, startups and researchers to develop new, fast and economical solutions to tackle pressing agricultural challenges. Participants will compete across eight different sectors — Use of Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture; Water Conservation & Soil Management; Agri-Mechanization; Crop Protection (Fertilisers & Pesticides); Renewable Energy for Agriculture; Post-Harvest Technology & Waste Management; Agri-Economics & Supply Chain; and other disruptive Agri-Tech innovations (excluding AI). The event has secured international partnerships, including NatureGrowth from Israel and the Agriculture Department of the Embassy of the Netherlands.

National partners include the Bombay Chamber of Commerce, Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), ICAER – Department of Agriculture, Cooperation Farmers Welfare, The Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board, and Nabard.
