Music mogul Louis Walsh is the latest celebrity to give his backing

Campaigners hoping to “Save Goole Hospital” are underlining their awareness push through the medium of song. An action group formed amid fears of closure of wards and services at Goole and District Hospital, earlier this year, has been receiving support from across Goole and beyond. Video messages of backing for the campaign have come from celebrities including Barry McGuigan, Mike Rutherford, Jasper Carrott, Andrea Corr and Eddie Jordan, who recorded his from his hospital bed before sadly passing away a couple of weeks afterwards.

The latest video posted this week (Wednesday, April 2) has music mogul Louis Walsh, who famously managed Johnny Logan, Boyzone, Jedward and Westlife, four of Ireland's most successful pop acts in the 1990s and 2000s, adding his backing. He said: “You know what you’ve gotta do, you’ve got to Save Goole Hospital and you’ve got to join the campaign. “It’s the right thing to do.

Please help Goole Hospital. It’s the best thing anybody could do.” Posting on its Facebook page, the action group said: “Well, we promised you a surprise and here's Louis Walsh who is supporting our Save Goole Hospital campaign and singalong.

We've been offered the chance to record a Goole Singalong album. Keep up to date with all the latest breaking news and top stories from Hull with our free newsletter “The songs are ready and we just need you the public to record your united voices of Goole and district community.” Rehearsals will take place on Saturdays, April 5 and 12, at Murphy's Pool and Snooker Club, in Victoria Street, Goole, at 2pm, with all welcome.

Participants will sing along to a couple of well-known songs and then practise the first song for the album, and for the public singing of it at a peaceful protest on Sunday, April 13, the mass “Singalonga Goole” taking place at noon that day, in Goole’s Precinct (clock tower end). “We're counting on the public of Goole of all ages to come and join in and support this great cause,” the post said. The campaign has gathered momentum, after over 1,000 people attended an initial meeting about the threat to the hospital’s future in the town’s Market Hall.

Tony Williams, communications director for Save Goole Hospital action group, said: “It’s about creating that community spirit and that we are all in this together. The best way to do this is with singing. “We are trying to get younger people involved – what I’ve noticed is we have a lot of support from the over-40s, the ones who realise we need a hospital – and we needed a way to connect with the younger ones, too.

I am hoping we can bring together pubs, clubs, older people, primary schools, charities, nurses and doctors from the hospital and musicians from around the area - anybody and everybody. “Let’s face it, saving a hospital is a boring subject, it’s not fun, and we are trying to bring that fun element into it. It means we can get the message across that we ALL need a hospital.

” The catchy campaign song, which begins “You need your hospital, your hospital needs you”, has been specially written and shared on social media for people to listen to and memorise. Tony said: “We hope to have some vocals from leader of East Riding Council Anne Handley and Mayor of Goole Anthony Raspin and maybe even MP David Davis; it's going to be like Goole Hospital Aid 2025!” The group has secured some sponsorship to enable the recording of a full album involving the public, with the hope a CD and downloads will raise more funds and awareness for the campaign. A GoFundMe appeal is running to support the group’s endeavours.

The appeal page says: “The group has been set up in response to concerns raised that services at Goole and District Hospital are under threat due to a review being carried out by NHS Humber Health Partnership. The group will lead campaigning, on the public’s behalf, against any formal proposal that is put to the Integrated Care Board which shows a negative outcome for Goole and the surrounding communities’ health services.” Tony said: “It’s a massive worry, if we lose our hospital.

We have been reaching out to places such as Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Doncaster and Hull that will all bear the brunt if this does happen, because it will put more pressure on their hospitals. “That’s as well as the damage to the environment from people having to travel further to hospital and the general inconvenience it will cause.” You can follow “save our hospital Goole” on social media and find out more on the website savegoolehospital.
