Starbucks is changing its rewards scheme - and not everyone will be happy

The coffee chain is making changes to its rewards scheme from January 28

Starbucks fans, brace yourselves for a revamp of the coffee giant's loyalty programme next week, which will introduce more rewards but make it tougher to reach Gold status. Currently, you bag three "stars" for every £1 spent at Starbucks, but from January 28, that'll rocket to ten "stars" per £1, alongside new lower reward tiers. Previously, customers needed 150 "stars"—a £50 spend—to start cashing in on perks.

With the updated scheme, you can snag a hot brewed coffee, tea or Americano for 130 "stars", just £13 spent. Rack up 300 "stars" and you're in for a treat from the bakery selection, including pastries and muffins. Hit 500 "stars" and any size handcrafted drink is yours, still at the £50 spend mark as before.

But watch out, reaching Gold status now requires more spending, though it does come with birthday freebies and complimentary customisations, reports the Mirror . Starbucks has announced changes to its rewards scheme, requiring customers to gather 2,500 "stars" for Gold status, up from the current 450 "stars".

This means members will need to spend £250 instead of £150 to reach this level. However, existing "stars" will be multiplied by 3.33 with the new system's launch.

For example, a balance of 150 "stars" will increase to 500 "stars", ensuring customers can still claim their free drink. Starbucks explained: "The new scheme introduces more rewards, redeemable sooner. Featuring brand-new tiers, New Starbucks Rewards offers members a wider variety of food, beverages, and merchandise options which start at a lower spend threshold.

Previously customers were required to accumulate 150 stars (equivalent to £50 spend) to begin redeeming rewards." "They can now begin redeeming hot brewed coffee, tea and americanos from 130 Stars (£13) and redeem free bakery items for 300 Stars (£30). Now, for the first time, Stars can now be redeemed for more than just handcrafted drinks, including select bakery items and Starbucks merchandise for the first time ever.

" This update follows Costa Coffee's introduction of a "swaps" feature in its loyalty program, allowing two "beans" to be exchanged for extras like syrups or cream. Costa Club members earn one "bean" per drink, or two when using a reusable cup. Costa Coffee delighted its loyal fans by revealing a perk via an email blast last August, which stated: "Introducing, an extra benefit for Costa Clubbers.

As well as earning 10 beans towards your usual free drink, with Swaps you can now treat yourself to a little reward, more often.".
