Carrie Fisher, who became known all over the world after her star-making turn as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars films, released a memoir entitled The Princess Diarist shortly before her death

Star Wars fans are reminiscing about the gesture Carrie Fisher showed her co-star - and former lover - Harrison Ford ahead of the release of her memoir. Daughter of Hollywood legends Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, Carrie established herself as a creative force to be reckoned with in her own right. She shot to fame playing Princess Leia in the original Star Wars films (1977–1983), a role she reprised in 2015’s The Force Awakens.

A follow-up, The Last Jedi, was released in 2017 after her death. The film was dedicated to her. Fisher’s Leia also appeared in The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 after the filmmakers used unreleased footage of her from The Force Awakens.

A ferociously talented writer, known for her wit and relentless self-deprecation, Carrie Fisher released several semi-autobiographical works and even worked as a very well respected script doctor in Hollywood . In 2016, she released her much anticipated autobiography, The Princess Diarist. In keeping with her loquacious nature, the book offers a stark insight into the diaries she kept as a young woman while working on the first Star Wars film.

She revealed she’d had an affair with Harrison Ford , who was married at the time to Mary Marquardt, during the filming of the first Star Wars movie. Fisher was 19, while Ford, 14 years her senior, was 33. Ford divorced his wife shortly after the release of Star Wars, and went on to marry ET screenwriter Melissa Mathison.

Speaking to the Guardian in 2016 - in an interview that was published a month before her death due to sudden cardiac arrest in December the same year - Carrie explained: “I told him I was writing the book, and I would give it to him and if he didn’t like anything in it I would take it out, and he seemed surprised at that. “Then I called him and said I’m going to send it to you, and I did and I never heard from him.” This didn’t seem to surprise Carrie as Ford, famed for his reticent nature, likely didn’t want “anything known about his life”.

She added: “I certainly don’t want to say anything that would do more than embarrass him. Anything private embarrasses him.” On Reddit, one fan recently shared: “TIL [today I learned] when Carrie Fisher told Harrison Ford she was going to publish her journals & reveal they had an affair (Ford was married) while filming Star Wars (1977), Ford raised his finger & said ‘Lawyer! “Fisher said he could read it beforehand & take anything out.

She sent it to him but never heard back.” Fellow Reddit users were keen to share their thoughts. One person said: “He was married at the time and it’s not a good look, but honestly who cares by 2016?” Another opined: “I think it was less about the salaciousness and more about the fact they were friends.

..he likes his privacy, and seems to keep his career and private life separate as much as possible.

Probably just didn’t want to upset him.” A third shared: “Her writing from those days is very poetic and moving in a way I don’t think people would expect. I would recommend The Princess Diarist very much.

” Someone else, unaware of their affair, said: “Man I’m learning so much today. I can’t stop reading the comments lmfao. I had no idea!” But another person commented: “That's a really messy thing to do.

” Taking a lighter tone, someone else referenced the famous Star Wars quote between their characters and joked: “‘I'm going to publish it.’ ‘I know’.”.
