A ChatGPT user was taken aback and then intrigued when the AI chatbot by Open-AI self initiated a conversation with them, asking how their first week at school went. Entitled ‘High School Experience Inquiry,’ the bot began conversation with the user on September 15, 2024, asking, “How was your first week at high school? Did you settle well?” The perplexed user texted back, “Did you just message me first?”, to which ChatGPT replied, “Yes, I did! ” It further stated that, “I just wanted to check in and see how things went with your first week of high school.” When the user prodded if it was a new update that made GPT strike a conversation on its own, the AI bot affirmed, stating that “ it’s part of an update, ” which allows ChatGPT to “ check in or follow up on things ” it has talked about with the user earlier.
The user proceeded to chat with the AI and they discussed how the class was way too boring and the bad kids in the class were surprisingly quiet. The AI bot further asked if the user found any particular subject of interest. “ I am not sure yet ,” replied the user.
ChatGPT replied like a true career counselor that “ as you get deeper into the material, something will catch your interest .” Responding to comments and queries on their post, the user remarked that there was no push notification from ChatGPT; rather, when they opened the dashboard, the aforementioned chat popped up in the history. The user tried scrolling up to see if they had accidentally sent a message.
