Berkeley High School’s football team pulled off the Mount Pleasant double recently, coasting past Wando and Lucy Beckham on the road in back-to-back weeks at Charleston County School District 2 Stadium. In a 30-9 victory over Lucy Beckham Friday, Oct. 25, Stags senior running back Jaden Mack carried six times for 163 yards and two scores, including one on an 81-yard scamper.
The Stags improved to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the region heading into their final regular season game at Cane Bay High School Friday, Nov. 8. A victory would guarantee Berkeley its first winning season since 2019-20 under then-coach Randy Robinson and at least a runner-up finish in the league.
Stags sophomore quarterback Henry Rivers passed for 145 yards and a touchdown to senior receiver Jvaariez Sumpter. Sumpter grabbed four receptions for 100 yards. Senior Johoava Williams chipped in 76 yards rushing and reached paydirt once.
In all, Berkeley rolled up 452 yards, while limiting the Bengals to 253 yards. The win was the fifth in six games for the Stags. On defense, the Stags’ effort was led by junior defensive back Chamberlin Thompson and junior linebacker Marcus Henderson.
Each accounted for 15 total tackles and junior defensive lineman Landon Jackson was in on 10 total stops. The Cane Bay-Berkeley series is tied 7-7, but the Stags have mostly dominated lately. Berkeley’s come-from-behind 24-21 win in Moncks Corner in 2023 was the sixth in eighth meetings.
The teams have encountered each other every year since 2010. The Cobras won five of the first six meetings. The Class 5A Div.
II playoffs open up Friday, Nov. 15, with the top four seeds from the Lower State receiving byes until Friday, Nov. 22.
