As people age, and physical activity becomes less structured in everyday lives it can become difficult to maintain a connection to the innumerable benefits of sports, training or even unstructured but vigorous, playing. Mary Wilson, owner of Stability Studio , said that she was active in sports as a young child, and when her involvement in sports ended she quickly realized that "it wasn't going to work for me." "I just started running, took up running and since then over the years just explored different modalities of exercise," Wilson said.

That exploration led her to pilates. Mary Wilson, owner of Stability Studios, said that their community of patrons kept them in business through the COVID pandemic and is driving expansion of the business into a larger space in Orcutt. Wilson is married to Dr.

Doug Wilson, licensed chiropractor who operates an office in the same business complex as Stability Studio, with the two sharing a deep connection to overall wellness. After attending a class, Dr. Wilson stayed with the training, and credits it with extending his football officiating career.

Wilson's experience with people who have joint and muscle pain allowed Mary to recognize the unique impact that exercises done on "the reformer" (the famous pilates training table) could have for people with mobility or strength issues. Dr. Wilson's experience with skeletal muscular structure of the body also helps Stability Studios to craft exercises and training sessions that target specific body parts or functions, more effectively.

Opened in 2019, Wilson said that Stability Studio is different from other studios because of their focus on fitness. "Our classes have a foundation class just to get people used to being on the reformer and then from there we just quickly try to get them moving and add more," Wilson said. She said that many of her students have noted that they have gone to facilities in other cities and found they can't get quite the same experience; something that certainly helped the studio make it through the COVID pandemic and related lockdown measures.

"We had so many members that supported us online," said Wilson. "We took that platform and tried to run with it, our members were just so supportive. And this community is great for that.

" When the studio reopened for in-person service the support didn't wane, with Wilson saying that in addition to expansion of services at their South Miller location they are hoping to break ground on a facility in Orcutt with more space once permits are approved. Stability's website showcases the tagline "Fitness, Community, Stability", and they have worked hard to create a space focusing on fitness, providing additional strength and stability — and community — for her clients. "We're all about fitness so we're about all modalities.

We love Pilates and we love Barre," Wilson said of the classes offered and the benefits of the low impact exercises. The studio has recently started a running club at the request of clients and trainers, that had 20 members compete in the November City to the Sea marathon.
