New Delhi: Some robbers went on a stabbing spree in northwest Delhi on Saturday, leaving five individuals injured in a series of attacks that lasted around an hour. The assailants have been taken in by the cops. Sonu Kumar, a vegetable seller, was stabbed and robbed of his cash, phone and other documents at 4am in Indra Nagar.
Sonu said he and his uncle, Om Prakash, were heading to Azadpur Mandi when two youths on a scooter stopped them. One of them, believed to be 18-20 years old, threatened them with a knife. Sonu and his uncle handed over their phones.
The youths also snatched Rs 50,000 and some papers. When Sonu resisted, the youth stabbed him on the left side of his chest. Later, at 4.
30am, Mukesh Kumar was stabbed and looted of Rs 1,200 under the Azadpur flyover. Two men who tried to intervene were attacked as well. Kumar, a pickup van driver, was removing items from his vehicle when he was intercepted and attacked by the duo.
Abhishek Pandey, a cab driver who was passing by, stopped to help Kumar but was stabbed by the youths. Head constable Jai Bhagwan, posted at Ranjeet Nagar police station, witnessed the incident and attempted to apprehend the duo but was also attacked with a knife. The spree continued at 5am in Kewal Park, where Chinmay, a YouTube creator, was stabbed in the thigh and robbed of his mobile phone and laptop.
The accused then fled the scene on their scooters. Chinmay told the cops that two youths on a grey scooter had stopped him. They snatched his backpack, which contained his mobile phone and other valuables.
When he resisted, one of the youths stabbed him in the right thigh. Chinmay described the attackers as two youths aged 20-22 years, one wearing a black check shirt and the other wearing a white check shirt. Police said the team scanned CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the crime scenes for clues to the identities of the suspects.
Based on this, Suraj, 19, was nabbed and his associate, a juvenile, was also apprehended. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in all three robbery cases, providing crucial details about the execution of the crimes. Based on their disclosure, the police recovered the stolen items, including two mobile phones, a laptop, Rs 41,180 in cash and a scooter that was stolen from the Shalimar Bagh area.
Police found that Suraj was involved in six earlier cases related to theft and the Arms Act. A case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita's sections 309(4) for robbery, 311 for robbery or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt and 3(5) for common intent has been filed..
