Ray Stein struck out 10 batters and Aiden Rosales drove in three runs as St. Peter's Prep avenged last year's county championship loss to Union City.

St. Peter’s Prep has not forgotten about their previous matchup with Union City. Last May, the Marauders were in line for a potential third-straight Hudson County Tournament championship.

They reached the finals and were one victory shy of a three-peat. Facing Union City in that championship affair, St. Peter’s fell in a heartbreaker.

It is a defeat like that one that stays inside a team’s mind, fueling them for the next campaign. On Monday, April 15, 2025, St. Peter’s hit the road to take on Union City atop the Soaring Eagles’ roof in search of avenging that loss.

These Hudson County juggernauts have traded wins in each of the last five showdowns, and that alternating pattern continued following Monday’s contest. On a warm day - finally - with blue skies, Marauders senior Ray Stein paved the way with another illustrious outing on the mound. He powered 10 strikeouts, allowing one run on one hit in five frames to hold Union City’s lineup to a minimum.

In five innings, St. Peter’s Prep extended their winning streak to seven games, registering an 11-1 victory to take an early lead in the Hudson County standings. 4/14 - 4:30 PM Baseball Final St.

We love the way he is getting built back up,” SPP head coach Pat Laguerre said. Stein had a terrific 2024 campaign as a junior, which included 54 punch-outs and a 1.99 earned run average.

There might be an unavoidable expectation he needs to fulfill as the Marauders’ ace, but after undergoing surgery on his elbow several months ago, the coaching staff tries to keep any added pressure off of him. “When he’s on the mound, we feel good about winning that game,” Laguerre said. “Our main focus for him, though is to continue feeling good while throwing and making sure his health is never an issue.

” Stein began Monday by striking out the side in the bottom of the first, then followed that up with two more multi-strikeout innings. He also made a crucial defensive play in the third inning, throwing out a runner at home plate with runners on base. End 3 St.
