The St. Mary’s Catholic Women’s Association will hold its annual Game and Card Party from 9:30 a.m.
to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26.
This is a chance to play games like rummy, canasta, bridge, Mahjong, backgammon, chess, Scrabble, cribbage, hand and foot, and more. This event is open to the public at a cost of $15 per person, and will be held in St. Angela Hall.
CWA volunteers are preparing breakfast and lunch items as well as coffee, iced tea and other drinks. There also will be donated door prizes, and winners will be announced throughout the event. This year’s proceeds will be shared with the St.
Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and MHA Nurture Home. St. Vincent de Paul serves the poor of our community by operating a free food pantry.
The pantry, located at 138 Fairfield St. S.E.
is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.
m. Monday through Thursday. They provide over 21,000 pounds of food and supplies each month to nearly 400 families representing well over 1,000 individual recipients.
In addition, they provide limited emergency financial assistance when utilities are about to be cut-off and for filling essential prescriptions. More than 100 dedicated volunteers provide the hearts, hands, and funds to make this ministry possible. MHA Nurture Home serves women who are homeless with a mental illness.
They provide structured interventions to empower each of the women to become self-sufficient. These are combined with individualized support to improve the mental health of women. Weekly support groups enable residents to become empowered and confident in their choices and relationships.
Parenting classes, health and nutrition classes, and various volunteer activities are provided. Residents receives credit counseling and budgeting financial literacy education through Security Federal Bank. The Thriving Together program provides aftercare support and The Cottage at Nurture Home is a residence for heads of households who have demonstrated progress in their independence and stability.
The structure of Nurture Home and the direct support from staff through daily interaction facilitates stability for each resident. Since 2015, they have had over 95% successful outcomes. The CWA supports its St.
Mary’s parish family, the Catholic school and community by providing Christian outreach and service through our many projects, activities and events. Since 2010, the annual Card and Game Party alone has provided over $30,000 in funding to local charities and organizations..
