Squirrels will never enter your garden if you spread 1 natural item they ‘cannot tolerate’

Squirrels, while often considered pests , are also wild animals and notoriously difficult to eradicate. Despite the enjoyment some find in watching squirrels, they can wreak havoc in gardens , causing significant damage and disturbing bird feeders . Since wild animals tend to stay where there’s food, the straightforward solution would be to remove all nuts, fruits, vegetables, fungi, and insects, but this isn’t practical in a domestic setting.

What’s more, squirrels can be a nightmare for homeowners, potentially causing thousands of pounds in damage by gnawing on wires and woodwork or ripping through insulation and plasterboard. To deter these pests from your garden and property, Jordan Foster, a pest control expert at Fantastic Pest Control, has offered his top advice. Jordan noted that squirrels have particular dislikes when it comes to scents and “simply cannot tolerate some smells” - coffee grounds being one such odour.



He suggested: “Spread coffee grounds in your borders as squirrels hate the smell of them and will run away and won’t come back.” Gardeners are encouraged to sprinkle used coffee grounds around their garden’s perimeter to protect their plants and blooms. To ensure the grounds stay put and enhance the odour, add a few drops of water.

Before applying widely, it’s wise for gardeners to test a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t harm their plants. Coffee grounds might also be effective in warding off other pests like cats and rats. The green-fingered gurus over at Love The Garden have dished out a spicy tip to keep those pesky squirrels at bay.

They said: “Squirrels can’t stand the hot, spicy flavours of chilli, and so a liberal scattering of these could help deter them from the garden.” They also offered up a fresh idea to plant mint aplenty since “squirrels find peppermint too strong for their sensitive noses”. Gardeners need to be aware that it’s always wise to glance over their local regulations before sprinkling any pest-repelling concoctions in their green spaces.
