Want to make some changes or upgrades to your home but don't have the budget to hire a professional? Don't worry. There are many affordable do-it-yourself projects you can do in the new year. Whether you're selling your home or are setting down roots for years to come, these changes will improve the look and value of your home without breaking the bank.

Abby Temple, a Realtor at Carriage Properties, says the first DIY project you should consider will immediately improve your home's look. "It's so simple and easy: paint your front door," she says. It's your home's first impression, and there is no need to hire anyone for this project.

" Once you're done with giving the front door a facelift, don't stop there. "If in doubt, paint it," says Roni Haskell, broker associate and Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. This includes trim, ceilings, stair treads, and doors.

A fresh coat of paint on the inside and outside trim can bring thousands of dollars in return on your investment, but only if it is done meticulously." Haskell suggests using a neutral color that "gives a sense of freshness that will attract a wide spectrum of buyers." Her favorite color is Sherwin Williams Frosty White.

"Many Charleston area builders have been using this color on ceilings and walls for several years now," she says. Another easy-to-do project recommendation that Haskell suggests is updating light fixtures and plumbing fixtures, such as faucets. "There are some great styles that are budget-friendly," she explains.

These small upgrades make the home feel like someone has cared for it. If you are selling your home, the next buyer will see these upgrades, and if they can't do these projects themselves, they will see them as a favored asset to the property. It will bring more value to the home.

" When considering other DIY projects, Scott Ferguson, sales manager at Pawleys Island Realty, encourages homeowners to think outside of the box or home. "I tell my clients who are selling their homes to take a hard look at the exterior of their home," he says. "Does it have great curb appeal? How is the landscaping, and what small improvements can you make as a homeowner that will have people looking to buy or say, 'Wow, I love the look of this home from the street.

' For example, can you add seasonal flowers, or should your DIY project be to make your lawn well-manicured? A great lawn screams owners who take care of their homes." Even something as simple as a good wash or organizing can go a long way in improving the look and value of your home. "Does the driveway or the siding need a good power wash?" says Ferguson.

"Is your front porch, if you have one, inviting? If not, consider adding plants, new furniture, or seasonal decorations." Another affordable DIY project Temple suggests adding small upgrades to the outdoors to make it homey. "Add a TV, outdoor shower, fireplace, fire pit, or a mini kitchen," she says.

"They can all be done by you. It's all about DYI for 25.".
