Spotlight on rich past of MP's seafood biz

In recognition of Women's History Month, the Town of Mount Pleasant's Historical Commission honored the contributions of Tressy Magwood Mellichamp (left) and Cindy Tarvin (also pictured) on March 29. The female titans of the local seafood industry filled in attendees on the history of shrimping and how women helped propel the business of trawling and harvesting seafood. The guest speakers touched on the environmental degradation and warming waters combining to reduce shrimp numbers.

Both women are spearheading fundraising efforts to help commemorate and celebrate the rich maritime history of area fishermen..
