TOP TTO swimmer Dylan Carter splashed to gold in the men’s 50m freestyle when the third and final leg of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup got underway yesterday in Singapore. It was Carter’s second gold medal of the campaign following his victory in the same event in the first leg in Shanghai, China, some two weeks ago. Yesterday, Carter was always near the speed when he dived into action from lane five with the third fastest reaction time of 0.
62 seconds. Carter was second to the 25-metre mark in a quick 9.98 seconds, marginally behind Germany’s Marius Kusch in 9.
95. The TTO swimmer then exploded off the turn and finished in a zesty 10.84 seconds for a 20.
82 overall time. He was the only swimmer under 21 seconds for the race and was trailed by Australia’s Isaac Cooper (21.01) while Kusch held on for bronze in 21.
04. The Netherlands’ Nyls Korstanje—the event’s fastest qualifier—just failed in his bid to make the medal podium, registering a 21.12-second fourth place performance, with the USA’s Jack Dolan in fifth (21.
16). Korstanje’s countryman Kenzo Simons (21.21), Estonia’s Ralf Tribuntsov (21.
23) and Yuchan Ji (21.28), the 50m free champion in the previous leg rounded out the final placings. Earlier, Carter won heat six of eight to be the second fastest qualifier for the final behind Korstanje, who won heat seven in 20.
88 seconds. Carter has three remaining swims in the series. The 2024 Paris Olympian was scheduled to contest the preliminaries of the 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke last night.
For the 100m free, Carter is entered in lane six of heat ten of 11, while in the sprint backstroke, he will swim out of lane six in the fifth and final heat. His performance in the 50m free reflects a significant rebound from the second leg in which Carter was eighth (21.34) in Incheon, South Korea.
Then, Carter was also ninth in both the 100m free and the 50m back. He was also 11th in the 50m butterfly. The 50m butterfly will be Carter’s final event of the series starting with the heats tonight at 7.
03 p.m. T&T time.
This year’s Swimming World Cup has returned to the short course (25m) from last year’s long course (50m), an adjustment made to facilitate the Paris Olympics. The series serves as a warm-up and fine-tuning for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) scheduled for Budapest, Hungary in December. This year’s Swimming World Cup also offers a prize purse of US $1.
2 million, with additional bonuses, including US$10,000 for breaking a world record. Additional financial incentives include a US$10,000 bonus for athletes who complete a “crown” by winning the same event in all three cities..
