Ambitious plans to build a ' Caribbean-esque ' resort near one of Spain's most popular cities have been given the green light. Dubbed the ' Lagoon City ', tourists will soon be able to enjoy a 1.49-hectare manmade pool suitable for swimming and water sports surrounded by an artificial white sand beach, just four miles from the hotspot of Sevilla .

Developers have reportedly started the first phase for the acquisition of a 120,000m2 plot of land - after receiving approval from the local public authority at the Bormujos Town Hall. Believed to cost a staggering €100 million (around £84.36 million), the new complex is being spearheaded by Crystal Lagoons in partnership with Romanian investor Forty Management.

The mega project, which will be accessible to the public via a paid ticket, will also feature a 200-room 'luxury' hotel, three apart-hotel towers, an event centre, international restaurants, a sky bar, a promenade, as well as other 'bespoke services'. According to local media, it will also create more than 600 jobs and help 'support the local economy'. "Seville has one of the best climates in Europe, which will allow year-round enjoyment of this Public Access Lagoon (PAL) project, enhancing a tourist city par excellence, one of the most popular in Spain and Europe, receiving millions of visitors yearly," said Jean Pierre Juanchich of Crystal Lagoons.

"This development will change the lives of millions of Sevillians by setting a new standard of entertainment." While swathes of Brits will undoubtedly be lured to the crystal-clear lagoon and its 'Caribbean atmosphere', developers are still in the process of obtaining permits and licenses. The buyer will also need to obtain a construction permit within a maximum period of 18 months, which is industry standard for projects of this size.

Olive Press , a Spanish news site for Brits, say the 'green urban reconversion projects' aim to transform degraded or even totally abandoned spaces into 'a vibrant mixed green oasis'. Crystal Lagoons states it PAL projects can reduce the equivalent of 40 per cent of the carbon footprint in the tourism and transportation sectors 'by bringing beach life with turquoise waters and white sands to locations close to home' - reducing long car or plane journeys.

"The project in Sevilla is also proof of the success of Crystal Lagoons in the hospitality industry, where numerous global hotel chains such as Marriott, Radisson, Conrad, Hyatt Regency, and AVA Resort, have recognised the transformative value of Crystal Lagoons technology , incorporating this amenity as a centrepiece in their developments," the company added.
