Surat: More than a week after the fatal City Light spa fire that claimed the lives of two women from Sikkim, Umra police have yet to determine the actual owner of the property linked to the tragedy. The police have also failed to question or summon builder Anil Roongta, who reportedly purchased the property from Bhupendra Popat. On Thursday, a Surat court granted police remand for three suspects following a revision application by the police.
Initially, the court denied custody of the three accused — Vasim Chauhan, Shahnavaz Mistry, and Dilshad Khan — due to a weak remand application by Umra police. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-4) Vijaysingh Gurjar informed TOI: "In our revision application, we requested police custody of the suspects and were granted two days. We aim to gather crucial details on structural modifications, rent collection, and the impact fee, which led to the building's regularization.
We have received the Torrent Power report, which clarifies load-related questions. Roongta will appear on Saturday to give his statement." With Roongta still not questioned, the police recorded Popat's statement, in which he confirmed the sale of the property to the builder.
"We are awaiting reports from the fire department, Surat Municipal Corporation, and the electrical inspector. These documents are vital to identify the ownership and examine fire safety clearances and the building's legality. We hope to receive them within a few days," Gurjar added.
The fire broke out on the evening of November 6 at Gym-11 and ALF Hair and Beauty Lounge, where the two victims, Binu Limboo and Manisha, were employed..
