Southern women's basketball team coughs up 15-point lead in loss to Texas Southern

Through three quarters at Texas Southern, the Southern women's basketball team put itself in a sweet spot as it looked to win its second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference game on the road.

But after Southern entered the fourth quarter with a 43-28 edge, the bottom fell out as Texas Southern stormed back to claim a 55-51 win at H&PE Arena in Houston. Texas Southern (3-10, 2-0 SWAC) outscored the Jaguars 11-0 to start the fourth quarter.



Aniya Gourdine scored on a drive to push Southern's lead back to six points, but TSU kept the heat on. The Tigers tied the score 45-45 when Alaysia Fantroy fed Treasure Thompson for a layup with five minutes left. Gourdine's layup gave Southern its last lead 47-45 with four minutes to go.

Thompson tied the score with a jumper, and Texas Southern made 6 of 8 free throws in the closing minutes while Southern made just 2 of 11 from the field. Southern (3-12, 1-1) shot 32.8% from the field and was led by Tionna Lidge with 15 points.

Gourdine added 11 points and a team-high five rebounds. Texas Southern made all nine of its field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter and finished the game shooting 44.2%.

The Tigers had 25 turnovers but won the rebounding battle 34-24. In the first quarter, the game was tied 4-4 after the first four minutes. Texas Southern went ahead on a three-point play by Thompson and added a 3-pointer by Tiana Mathis as it led 12-9 going to the second quarter.

Soniyah Reed's 3-pointer helped Southern tie the score 14-14 before Southern began to surge. Lidge scored on consecutive trips down court to give Southern an 18-14 lead, and the Jaguars eventually took a 27-20 lead into halftime..
