Southern women warm up enough to sink UAPB

Even though temperatures had warmed up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, there was nothing but icy shooting in the H.O. Clemmons Arena on Saturday.

O. Clemmons Arena on Saturday. In the end, Southern warmed up just enough to defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 52-36 and pick up an important Southwestern Athletic Conference road win.

The win allows Southern (7-12, 5-1) to keep pace with conference leaders Texas Southern and Jackson State, who also won Saturday. Soniyah Reed turned in the best effort of anyone coming off the Southern bench to score 16 points and grab five rebounds. Aniya Gourdine added nine points and Tionna Lidge pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

UAPB (2-15, 0-7) started slowly and never found any rhythm. The Golden Lions made just 8 of 37 shots in the game, good for only 21.6%.

Southern made 16 of 46 shots (34.8%) and it was good enough to produce a double-digit second-half lead that was never challenged. After missing two days of practice this week, Southern's offense looked out of sync.

The Jaguars only scored four points in the opening eight minutes of the game, but managed to take a 9-8 lead into the second quarter. The main factor was Southern's defense, which kept it close despite the offensive troubles. Southern's backcourt ball pressure began to take a toll on UAPB in the second quarter when it scored the first six points.

UAPB looked like it might get going after D'arrah Allen's free throws sliced Southern's lead to 15-10. Instead, Jocelyn Tate scored on a runner in the lane and Southern forced three consecutive backcourt turnovers. Gourdine scored in the lane and Aleighyah Fontento knocked down a wide-open 3-pointer to give the Jaguars a 22-10 lead.

UAPB made just one field goal in the quarter as Southern led 26-16 at the half. Allen finished with 13 points to lead the Golden Lions, while Stephanie Okowi had seven rebounds..
