(Yonhap) SEOUL, Nov. 24 (Korea Bizwire) – In response to ongoing suspicions surrounding the fairness of South Korea’s national lottery, Donghang Lottery hosted a live broadcast of the Lotto 6/45 draw on November 23 to enhance transparency and public trust.

The event, dubbed the “2024 Lottery Day,” was held at the MBC headquarters in Seoul’s Sangam district, featuring public participation and a behind-the-scenes look at the draw process. This marks the second year that the lottery draw has been conducted before a live audience. Last year’s event, the first of its kind, saw an attendance competition ratio of 11.

4 to 1, and this year’s event attracted over 1,000 applicants for just 100 public viewing slots. The event gained additional attention with the appearance of Olympic shooting star Kim Ye-ji, who served as the ceremonial “Golden Hand” to activate the lottery machine. The program’s first segment included a science-themed talk show titled “The Science Behind Lottery Wins,” featuring popular science communicator Gwe Do and neuroscientist Professor Jang Dong-seon.

The discussion delved into the probabilities of lottery draws, the cognitive patterns behind number selection, and related scientific phenomena. In the second segment, 100 attendees observed and participated in the live draw process, including ball selection and machine testing, to emphasize the draw’s fairness and transparency. South Korean Olympic shooting medalist Kim Ye-ji expressed on Tuesday that she is willing to participate in extracurricular activities, as long as they contribute to enhancing the visibility of her sport.

(Yonhap) Donghang Lottery Executive Director Im Cho-soon stressed the randomness of the lottery draw, noting that outcomes are determined purely by probability and the number of participants. “From the start, all Lotto draws are conducted live and are subject to audits by external agencies, including the Board of Audit and Inspection. Manipulation is simply not possible,” Im stated.

Im also addressed the resurgence of rigging allegations following the unprecedented 63 first-place winners in July’s draw. “While this could seem suspicious, it actually reflects patterns in preferred number combinations among players. For instance, many South Koreans favor straight-line sequences on their tickets,” he explained.

He cited a similar case in the UK, where a draw featuring multiples of seven produced 4,082 winners. Im dispelled technical myths, such as the possibility of magnetic manipulation or external hacking of the system, noting that such scenarios are scientifically or logistically infeasible. He humorously referenced suggestions to revert to older arrow-based lottery methods, dismissing them as impractical given modern standards.

Meanwhile, the draw this time, held on November 23, produced eight first-place winners who will each receive 3.32 billion KRW (approximately $2.46 million) after correctly selecting the numbers 7, 11, 24, 26, 27, and 37.

Donghang Lottery continues to assert its commitment to transparency, leveraging public events and technical safeguards to combat skepticism and maintain confidence in the system. Ashley Song ([email protected]).
