For the second time in two years, voters rejected a ballot measure that would have mass commercialized marijuana and THC drugs in our state. It should send a clear message: the marijuana industry and its addictive products are not welcome in our neighborhoods. Now, it’s time for the pot profiteers to respect the will of voters and stop trying to force more dangerous, psychoactive drugs into the Mount Rushmore State.

To avoid going through this ordeal again, South Dakota should raise the threshold for ballots to pass to at least 60 percent so we should not have to vote on this issue again for a long time. It’s one thing to have issues like this decided legislatively, but enshrining these issues into our constitution is a whole other issue entirely. Elevating marijuana to a constitutional right could make it more difficult for the legislature to enact commonsense regulations and accountability measures for a profit-driven industry.
