According to local media, the Scania buses will be built by Victoria’s bus manufacturer Volgren, while infrastructure to charge the newest addition to the bus fleet will be installed at the Morphettville depot. There is no further technical data available at this point – not about the buses, nor the infrastructure. The state government says that South Australia hopes to be net zero by 2050.

It already has a lot of solar and wind energy and thus few emissions from the power grid, making transportation the largest single source of emissions there. It now appointed two global engineering advisory firms to help with creating a zero-emission public transport system. It already stopped buying diesel-only buses in 2022 and the Adelaide Metro bus fleet currently includes one battery-electric and two hydrogen buses, which are being trialled.

“These new business cases will build upon this prior body of work to decarbonise the metropolitan bus network and the Outer Harbor and Belair Lines, as we work towards our commitment to upgrade our public transport system to zero emissions with cleaner, greener and more efficient technologies,” said South Australia’s energy minister Tom Koutsantonis. “Not only are low and zero-emission transport options more environmentally friendly, they provide a smoother, quieter and more comfortable journey for commuters, which will encourage more people onto our public transport network.” premier.
