This summer is the most important in years for Manchester United, with the club’s status hanging in the balance.Since taking charge of the club, Ruben Amorim has not set the world alight with his system, which the squad are now beginning to get to grips with in recent matchday.Amorim admitted to being pleased by Manchester United’s performance, with the Red Devils outperforming Nottingham Forest in almost every key metric apart from the one which ultimately matters most.
Encouraging performances are all we can really judge Amorim from until next season at United, considering he is not at fault for his players making errors and missing chances. Therefore, United are expected to have a clearout this summer, with several arrivals set to replace players ultimately not good enough to play for the club. However, with a stretched budget, it could see some cheaper solutions arrive for United.

United sources have played down reported interest in re-signing Gomes this summer, despite his availability for free with his Lille contract set to expire. One reason behind this could be that his game has evolved into more of a holding midfielder than a player who would occupy one of those two number 10 positions for United. Amorim demands a lot from his deeper midfielders, which Gomes may not suit.

Gomes has always been small and lacked the physicality needed in England, and it could be a major risk to sign him as a holding midfielder. He shares qualities with Mainoo in terms of both being technically incredible, but United’s 19-year-old has physical qualities to back up the technical.United would be better served signing Chris Rigg from Sunderland, for example, with his tenacity and intensity being an impressive factor.
