A Manhattan jury’s decision to acquit Daniel Penny of criminally negligent homicide in the 2023 death of Jordan Neely on Monday caused quite a reaction on social media. That’s not surprising, considering the case became, as The Associated Press put it, “a flashpoint in the nation’s debate over racial injustice and crime.” Penny, who is white, physically restrained Neely , a Black man, on a subway train in May 2023, leading to Neely’s death.

Medical examiners ruled the death a homicide . Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R) took to X, formerly Twitter, to declare the acquittal “clearly the just and correct verdict,” while adding that he “was skeptical that a jury in New York City would reach a unanimous not guilty verdict.” The acquittal of Daniel Penny is clearly the just and correct verdict.

I must admit I was skeptical that a jury in New York City would reach a unanimous not guilty verdict, and the jury deserves credit for doing the right thing. Meanwhile, is there a worse prosecutor in America..

Imagine, just imagine, if Jordan Neely had been white and Daniel Penny was black Imagine what some of the folks defending Penny today would be saying. Just imagine. Others on X were also supportive of the verdict, while there appeared to be more skepticism on BlueSky and Threads.

Justice was done finally. Danny Penny not guilty on all counts. Daniel Penny needs to leave NYC and never return.

Come down here to Tennessee. We’ll welcome you like the hero you are. The recent conviction of an APD officer shows that the public is not simply going to "trust the experts" when there is video evidence to the contrary.

The Penny acquittal in NYC is the inverse. How could jurors disregard all of the witnesses who said Penny protected them? The Daniel Penny verdict is a signal: the BLM era is over. Cue Daniel Penny having dinner at Mar-a-Lago inauguration in 3.

.. I am sick to my stomach at the sheer jubilation over on Twitter right now that Daniel Penny got away with murdering Jordan Neely, an unhoused Black man with mental issues.

It's disgusting. Absolutely insane. Daniel Penny choked Jordan Neely until he fucking DIED and he knew damn well that was a possibility.

He didn’t care about Jordan’s life. He didn’t care if he died. Jordan Neely was just another worthless homeless person to Daniel Penny.

In light of the Penny verdict, just a reminder that "sickle cell trait" is a nonexistent condition that is frequently used to excuse police officers when black people die in their custody.www.nytimes.
