With Kaizer Chiefs' marketing director identifying a new role for Itumeleng Khune, we explore why the Bafana Bafana legend would be the perfect ambassador for Amakhosi. Check it out! Itumeleng Khune's playing days at his boyhood club, Kaizer Chiefs, could be well and truly over, with the club's marketing director, Jessica Motaung confirming the plans they have for the legendary goalkeeper. Khune's career has been in a state of uncertainty since his contract ended at the conclusion of last season, with no new playing deal in sight.

Motaung has confirmed the Soweto Giants' plants for Khune across three interviews on Radio 2000 with Thabiso Mosia, 94.7 with Robert Marawa and on Newzroom Afrika, stating their wishes to usher the 37-year-old into commercial and marketing team. Whether or not Khune sees himself in an ambassadorial role at the club, he'd be the perfect candidate for the job.

The ex-Chiefs skipper has only ever played his club football for the Glamour Boys, like Jamie Carragher with Liverpool and Ryan Giggs with Manchester United, Itu is a one-club man who is highly revered by supporters. Described as "a pillar of strength" for Chiefs, Khune spent five years in the club's youth structures and enjoyed his record-setting 20 season with the senior team, winning the league title on three occasions. Khune is not only synonymous with the Kaizer Chiefs brand, but also has the personality for an ambassadorial role at one of Africa's most respected institutions.

Capped 91 times by Bafana Bafana, it's not out of line to call Khune a South African football icon and according to the Motaung's, even if Itu continues his playing career elsewhere, the door remains open for him represent Amakhosi off the pitch. For now, the veteran shot-stopper is taking up a gig in broadcasting as a football analyst on SABC Sport, joining Mamelodi Sundowns legend Hlompho Kekana and Amakhosi cult hero, Jabu Mahlangu..
