AmaZulu co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi believes that now is the ideal time for his side to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership, with the reigning champions still finding their feet under their new head coach, Miguel Cardoso. While Sundowns have won both of their matches under the Portuguese coach, Vilakazi feels that the Brazilians are not yet the dominant force fans are used to. Cardoso’s Sundowns have secured narrow 1-0 victories over Raja Casablanca and Stellenbosch in their first two games, but Vilakazi, having watched both matches, suggests that the team is still finding its rhythm under the new leadership.
"I’ve watched them in both games and I can see that he’s trying to do something of his own, but it’s not happening as yet. They’ve won both games 1-0, and that’s not the Sundowns that we know. So, it’s a sign that things are not yet at the standard that he wants to see them," Vilakazi told journalists.
With Sundowns still adjusting to Cardoso’s methods, AmaZulu feel fortunate to face them at this stage. Vilakazi is confident that his team can take advantage of the situation and ensure they give their best performance to secure a victory. "We are fortunate to come up against them at this moment, where they are still trying to do something with the new coach.
So, we will make sure to give our best so that by the end of the day, we emerge victorious," he added. Despite acknowledging Sundowns' quality and their ability to grind out results, Vilakazi emphasized that AmaZulu will not underestimate them. He expressed the importance of his team competing fiercely and pushing hard to earn a positive result.
"We are not going to undermine Sundowns, they have quality, and they always work very hard in terms of getting results, but we will dig deep in terms of making sure that we also compete on the day," Vilakazi concluded. AmaZulu will be looking to capitalise on this perceived window of opportunity as they prepare to face Sundowns, aiming to make a strong statement in the league..
