The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly agreed a deal to appoint an Africa Cup of Nations-winning manager as their newest boss. According to , the Super Eagles are closing in on the appointment of German coach Winfried Schafer, who won the 2002 AFCON while in charge of Cameroon. While there was confusion surrounding the future of Augustine Eguavoen, who recently said he is still in charge of the team, it appears Schafer will assume the role.

Herve Renard was reportedly also considered for the job, that was expected to be held by Bruno Labbadia, whose appointment did not materialise despite an official announcement. Eguavoen, meanwhile, was in charge of Nigeria's two 2025 AFCON qualifiers earlier this month against Benin and Rwanda.
