A recent study has revealed the top 10 highest-ranked African clubs in the world, with Mamelodi Sundowns being one of the few teams hailing from outside North Africa. The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has recently published its list of the highest-ranked African clubs. According to the organisation’s official website, the points given to a club to establish its overall ranking on the continent are determined by the league and continental competitions in which it competes.
In the 2024 edition of these rankings, the Betway Premiership has been placed in sixth position, which has been to the detriment of a club like Sundowns, despite their regular participation in the CAF Champions League. The Egyptian Premier League and Morocco’s Botola Pro Inwi have been categorised as the two best divisions in Africa. As a consequence, their clubs occupy most of the spots within the top 10.
Esperance de Tunis of Tunisia is the only non-Egyptian or non-Moroccan club within the top seven. Masandawana has been ranked in eighth place, only ahead of Tanzania’s Young Africans and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad. These rankings are based on how each team performed between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024.
