WILLMAR — After a tight first 40 minutes, the Willmar girls soccer team dominated the last 40. Led by a four-goal effort from junior Telilie Lange, the Cardinals pulled away for a 6-2 Central Lakes Conference win against Detroit Lakes on Tuesday at the Willmar Civic Center turf fields. “Their goals came from some unfortunate mistakes on our part and we really rose above that,” said Willmar head coach Madeline Wertish.

“We reset at halftime. We needed to control the ball and keep it at our feet.” Lange scored the first of her goals on a free kick from 25 yards away in the 12th minute.

She tacked on another score in the 25th minute off an assist from Keianna Hillenbrand. Lange even added an assist in the 31st minute when she delivered a cross that was buried in the net by Lauren Kok. Lange added another goal off a rebound in the 56th minute.

Her final tally came on a 20-yard free kick in the 67th minute. “It’s good to see that accuracy from Telilie and being able to capitalize for us,” Wertish said of Lange’s free kicks. “It’s really a big lift for the team.

I know that’s a lot of pressure on her and she was able to rise above and capitalize on that.” Goalkeeper Kianna Eichhorst made six saves in the victory. Wertish also credited strong play from senior defensive midfielder Lindsey Linares Perez.

“She played lights out,” Wertish said of Perez. “She was everywhere to stop their attack and made tackles when we needed it. She had a really great game.
