Snow forecast as maps pinpoint 10 areas that could get snow in March with -5C big freeze

A late-March blitz of wintry weather could see parts of the UK covered in snow and a return to subzero temperatures.

The end of March is set to be characterised by see-sawing weather conditions, with 20C highs chased out by a -5C freeze and snow , new UK weather forecasts suggest. Despite the spring equinox on Thurday (March 20) expected to make the UK hotter than Spain or Greece, the warm and sunny conditions may not last for long, according to maps from WXCharts . A rainy front is forecast to move across the UK over the weekend, gradually pulling the mercury down before some regions experience a barrage of snowfall from Sunday (March 23), right up until the end of the month.

Flurries of snow are expected to hit most of Scotland at around 6am on Sunday, also spreading down into parts of northern England. Meanwhile, other regions, including the southeast, Wales and Devon will experience heavy showers heading into next week. Any hopes of a return to sunnier climes next week will be in vain, WXCharts suggests, with persistent snowfall expected across Scotland, including in the Highlands, Inverness, Perthshire and Lanarkshire - reaching 1cm along its northern coastline.



Around 3cm of snow could also have accumulated in central Yorkshire by Saturday, March 29, with a blanket of white also likely to descend near the Scottish border in Northumberland. Temperatures will hover around freezing point for the whole of the UK by 6am on Wednesday (March 26), forecasts suggest, with teeth-chattering lows of -5C in Inverness by mid-next week. Northwestern England could see a drop to -1C at around the same time.

The Met Office 's long-range forecast for March 24 to April 2 predicts unsettled conditions, with wind, rain and overnight frosts likely in the last week of the month. The UK areas where snow could fall this month: Scottish Highlands Inverness Perthshire Lanarkshire Cumberland Northumberland Durham Yorkshire Westmorland Lancashire Today: Frost and fog clearing into sunny spells across England, with temperatures staying warm and above the seasonal average. Some breeze in the southwest.

Tonight: Dry weather with a frost overnight in the north and milder conditions in the south. Patches of freezing fog possible. Thursday: Settled and sunny weather with warm temperatures.

Southeasterly breeze building throughout the day, especially in the west. Outlook for Friday to Sunday: A bright day for most of the UK with some warm sunshine, broken up by showers inthe southwest. Rain and cooler temperatures expected to move in over the weekend.
