Smoke Wafts From Fire Sparked in Chute of Brooklyn Public Housing Building

Smoke was seen wafting from a NYCHA building in Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday, April 13.This video, posted to X by @dreworder, shows emergency crews responding to the blaze, which was sparked in the chute above the compactor room at 177 Sands Street.The fire spread all the way up the chute, sending plumes of smoke skyward.“We had multiple people on floors, complaining of smoke. We had hose lines on the fifth, the 10th and the top floor to extinguish the fire once we got the water in the chutes,” FDNY Deputy Chief James Maloney said.“Then our next job was to get the fans into the staircases and into the hallways to blow all the smoke out.”FDNY said 12 people were transported with minor injuries.
