All Smithsonian Institution employees will return to the office five days a week starting the day after Easter. The order affects thousands of workers in the federal trust’s 21 museums, research facilities and the National Zoo who have worked at least part-time from home since the pandemic, according to a Smithsonian spokesperson. The institution employs roughly 6,000 people.
“Like everyone else in Washington, we had telework agreements,” the spokesperson told The Washington Times. “We don’t have telework agreements anymore.” Beginning Monday, the Smithsonian spokesperson said, all employees will be back in their offices from Monday through Friday each week.
The policy change comes as the Trump administration has ordered most of the nation’s roughly 3 million federal employees to return to the office or risk forfeiting their jobs. White House officials have singled out the extension of pandemic telework policies under the Biden administration as a key example of government fraud and waste.
