OTTAWA — Liberal Leader Mark Carney joked it would be “a bad idea” to send Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to fight back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada.
Smith fired back at Carney on Monday at a press conference in Edmonton. “I’ve noticed this with progressive men, how much they talk about how much they support women until they meet a strong, conservative woman,” said Smith. “The attitude is ‘sit down and shut up’.
” “Well, I don’t shut up,” said Smith. At a rally in Victoria, B.C.
, on Sunday evening, Carney listed all the ways that Canada is responding to the tariffs imposed by the U.S., and said that FOX News is one of the best platforms to get the administration’s attention.
“We’re sending Doug Ford onto FOX News to show them that we’re not messing around up here,” said Carney, to cheers and laughs from the crowd. “And we’re going to send Danielle next. Well, maybe we won’t.
We won’t send Danielle. That’s a bad idea. Strike that.
” It’s not the first time Smith has been the subject of the federal election campaign. An interview the Alberta premier gave to Breitbart, a right-wing U.S.
media outlet, caused a minor controversy on the first day of the campaign. Smith told Breitbart that she was pressing the Trump administration to put the tariffs “on pause” while Canadians went through an election because “it seems to be benefiting the Liberals.” On the podcast, Smith argued that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre would be more “in sync” with the Trump administration.
Poilievre rejected Smith’s claim, saying that Trump had “endorsed” Carney when he said he’d rather deal with a Liberal prime minister . “People are free to make their own comments. I speak for myself,” said Poilievre, when he was asked about Smith’s comments in March.
