To reduce maternal and newborn mortality in the country, the federal government Thursday launched the Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative to address maternal and newborn mortality across the country. Mohammed Ali Pate, made this known while speaking to journalists in commemoration of the 2025 Safe Motherhood Day in Abuja. Professor Pate stated that no woman should die giving life, and no child should be born into preventable suffering, which is reason for the slogan, “Care for Moms, Hope for the Babies.” He said the theme for this year is “Innovating for Safer Birth: which is a Collective Responsibility to Crash Maternal Mortality,” and called on governments, health professionals, partners, and communities to take ownership of a shared mission to make childbirth safe for every Nigerian woman, regardless of her location, income and background.



Prof. Pate added that Safe Motherhood is not merely a health agenda, it is a moral imperative, a cornerstone of sustainable development, and a critical measure of national progress..
