Small colleges: W&J men, women start PAC play with wins

Nathan Plotner scored 13 points, Alex Acosta had a double-double and the Washington & Jefferson men’s basketball team opened Presidents’ Athletic Conference play with a 68-54 win over previously undefeated Franciscan on Wednesday night. W&J (3-1) led 28-23 at halftime and its 12-4 run to start the second half opened up a double-digit advantage. Plotner scored seven of his points in the second half.

Acosta had 12 points and 11 rebounds on the night. Acosta tallied 10 points after halftime. Matt Seidl gave W&J three players in double figures with his 10 points.



Josh Zimmerman scored a game-high 18 points for Franciscan (4-1) and Sawyer Butler had 17 points but only four in the second half. Grove City 64, Waynesburg 56 Chase Yarberough, Mike Christenson and Jonah Bock each scored 14 points and Grove City erased a halftime deficit and defeated visiting Waynesburg 64-56 in the PAC opener. Waynesburg (0-4) led 28-23 at halftime but Grove City (3-2), behind its balanced scoring, was able to rally over the final 20 minutes against the cold-shooting Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg shot only 32 percent from the field and made 18 of 30 free throws. PJ Suggs was the only Waynesburg player to score in double figures as he tossed in 17 points. Women’s results Wash & Jeff 94, Franciscan 42 Bryn Bezjak led 13 Washington & Jefferson players in the scoring column, scoring 13 points as the Presidents rolled to a 94-42 victory over host Franciscan in the PAC opener for both teams.

The win makes W&J 3-1 overall. Franciscan is 0-4. The Presidents took control early, forging a 54-16 halftime lead.

W&J shot 63 percent in the first half and outrebounded Franciscan 25-9 in the first half and 50-22 in the game. Bezjak scored 11 of her points in the first half. Meghan Dryburgh had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with six assists.

Stellanie Loutsion scored 11 points and Jordyn Wolfe hard 10. Grove City 71, Waynesburg 60 Reese Hasley and Clara Hannon combined for 40 points Grove City pulled away down the stretch for a 71-60 victory over visiting Waynesburg in the PAC opener. It was the first loss of the season for Waynesburg (4-1).

Grove City improved to 2-2. The Wolverines outscored Waynesburg 15-5 over the final 3:48 to break open a close game. Hasley scored 21 points and Hannon tossed in 19 to lead Grove City.

Waynesburg’s Kara McFadden matched Hasley’s output by scoring 21 points. She was the only Yellow Jackets player in double figures..
