SKM to skip SC panel meet, alleges focus on clearing road blockades, not agri issues

Farmers' union Sanyukt Kisan Morcha decides not to join the Supreme Court's high-powered committee meeting, criticizing its focus on clearing blockades over core issues like MSP. The decision coincides with leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal's deteriorating health amid a 37-day hunger strike. Other farmer groups also prefer direct talks with the Union government.

BATHINDA: Farmers' union Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) announced Wednesday its decision not to participate in a Supreme Court-constituted high-powered committee meeting scheduled for Jan 3. SKM leaders expressed concerns during an online meeting Monday night that the committee's focus was on clearing highway blockades rather than addressing farmers' core issues. The decision coincided with the ongoing hunger strike by farmers' leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal , whose health has deteriorated after 37 days of fasting to demand legal guarantees for MSP.

Efforts by retired police officers and Punjab officials to persuade Dallewal to accept medical aid have so far failed. The SC panel, formed on Sept 2, had invited SKM to discuss farmer-related issues - such as MSP, institutional debt, and rising input costs. However, SKM's Harinder Singh Lakhowal said the panel's terms of reference primarily aimed at reopening highways blocked by protesting farmers at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana.

"We are not part of those blockades and we do not accept the court's intervention in our policy-related struggle with central govt," SKM said in a statement. Other farmers' groups, including SKM (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have also distanced themselves from the committee, preferring direct talks with Union govt. Farmer netas at Shambhu plan to increase mobilisation, with the next batch of protesters expected to join in the coming days.

Protesting farmers have called on Punjab govt to pass a resolution against the draft of the national agricultural marketing policy framework. The protest continued to draw attention, with Punjabi singer Babbu Mann visiting Khanauri to express solidarity. A delegation from Samajwadi Party, led by UP MP Utkarsh Verma, also visited the site.
