SK Telecom (SKT) announced today (Korea time) that it has received the 'Future Award' at the 2024 World Communication Awards (WCA) held in London, UK, recognizing its achievements in AI research. Now in its 26th year, the World Communication Awards, organized by the British telecom media outlet Total Telecom, is a prestigious global telecom technology awards ceremony that honors companies with outstanding achievements in various fields, including telecommunications technology, networks, brands, and content across a total of 23 categories. SKT was awarded the 'Future Award' for its AI-based wireless transmission and reception technology developed in collaboration with NTT Docomo, NTT, and Nokia Bell Labs.

This award recognizes the best future technology innovation led by telecom operators or manufacturers. Through global collaboration, SKT developed technology that enhances frequency utilization efficiency by applying commonly used AI models in vision AI to the base station's modulation and demodulation transmission technology. Initial verifications in laboratory environments confirmed speed improvements of over 10% on average, and the company plans to drive practical performance enhancements in commercial networks through ongoing research and standardization efforts.

SKT has designated Telco Edge AI infrastructure as a core technology for the evolution of next-generation infrastructure and is leading the standardization of related technologies through continuous efforts. In May, the company proposed the importance and need for standardization of Edge AI infrastructure at a 3GPP workshop, gaining support from global operators. It also suggested the standardization of Edge AI infrastructure at the O-RAN Alliance standard meeting held in June.

This recent award has validated their technological capabilities in Telco Edge AI. “This recognition reaffirms the innovative achievements we have made based on SKT’s world-class mobile communication and AI technologies," said Ryu Tak-ki, SKT’s Head of Infrastructure Technology. "We will continue to take the lead in developing core technologies for the evolution of mobile communications, including Telco Edge AI infrastructure and power-saving technologies, to provide new value to our customers.
