Six-year-old raped by 25-year-old man in Katargam

Surat: A 25-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl after kidnapping her from the footpath where she was sleeping beside her mother in the jurisdiction of Katargam police station. The minor suffered severe injuries and underwent surgery. However, she is out of danger, doctors at the govt hospital said.

Police arrested Ajay Verma, a labourer, and booked him under relevant sections of BNS and Pocso. Verma was passing by the road when he noticed the girl sleeping beside her mother. He kidnapped her at around 10 pm on Friday.



After sexually assaulting the minor, he abandoned her at the same spot. Later, the girl returned to her mother and tried to wake her up, but she was in deep sleep. When her mother woke up, she noticed the minor bleeding heavily and took her to the hospital.

The incident was reported to the Katargam police by the hospital, and a team of 150 policemen, 12 police sub-inspectors, and six police inspectors were entrusted with the probe. They scanned through the footage of 200 CCTV cameras and traced the suspect. Verma, a native of Dhanardi village in Balram district of Uttar Pradesh, does plaster of Paris work and was working in the city two years ago.

He later went to work in South India and recently returned to the city around a month ago. He is married, but his family lives in his native village. Police will get the medical examination of the accused done to collect medical evidence.
