As many as 20 people have so far been killed due to the consumption of toxic liquor in Bihar’s Siwan, Jagran.com reported. This alarming situation began late Tuesday night and persisted into Wednesday night, particularly affecting the village of Sonadhani in the Bhagwanpur block, where four additional deaths were reported on Thursday.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the tragic incidents. The police headquarters has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Excise Enforcement Unit. This team has been dispatched to Siwan and the surrounding areas of Saran to gather information and speak with the families of the deceased and local residents.

On Wednesday, he interacted with victims receiving treatment at the district hospital. He confirmed that the autopsies for four deceased individuals have been completed and approximately 20 others are hospitalised.

The situation at the Siwan Sadar Hospital remains critical, as the influx of patients suffering from alcohol poisoning continued until late Wednesday evening. Family members transported the sick to the hospital via ambulances and private vehicles, often when the patients showed severe symptoms such as impaired vision. Local authorities have made announcements urging residents to seek medical treatment without fear of legal repercussions.

Many patients reported significant vision problems, prompting urgent transfers to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) for advanced care. Locals have expressed concerns over the alleged complicity of local law enforcement with alcohol traffickers. They claim that despite police raids, liquor smugglers continue to distribute alcohol door-to-door.

Despite the district's prohibition on alcohol, the ban has not been effectively enforced, allowing the illegal trade to flourish.
