Article content Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team ( SIRT ) is investigating after a man became unresponsive while in the custody of the Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP. At around 3:30 p.m.
on Oct. 23, police responded to “ a report of a male sitting on the step of a residential address with possible facial injuries,” according to a news release issued Tuesday. “The subject of the call, a 55-year-old man, was located and later removed from the residence at the request of its occupants.
The man was transported to the Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP detachment to be lodged until sober,” stated the release. However, it goes on to say that around 7 a.m.
on Oct. 24, a guard alerted RCMP members that the “ man had not moved for a period of time.” “ The man was checked and determined to be breathing but non-responsive.
” The man, who was not named in the news release, was transported to hospital in Fort Qu’Appelle and then transferred to Regina. He remains there in “critical condition,” according to the release. It states SIRT was alerted to the situation on Oct.
24 and that a team consisting of the civilian executive director and four investigators were deployed. It also notes that a “community liaison” will be appointed. “ SIRT’s investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s detention and his time in custody,” said the release, adding that a final report will be issued publicly within 90 days of the end of the investigation.
