Outgoing Ambassador of Japan Watanabe Nobuyuki was farewelled during a formal ceremony at the Government House by the Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae last Thursday. During the occasion, Sir Bob thanked the government and the people of Japan for providing and funding various co-operation and partnership programs that have contributed to the development of many communities throughout the country. Sir Bob made mention of the newly built Nadzab Tomadachi International Airport in Lae as an example of the many significant contributions by Japan towards enhancing development and economic growth in Papua New Guinea.

In response, Mr Nobuyuki said Japan is honoured and grateful to PNG for renaming the airport Nadzab Tomadachi International Airport, as testament of the close friendship between the people of Japan and Papua New Guinea. Ambassador Nobuyuki informed the Governor-General that during his tenure as Japan’s Ambassador to PNG, he had travelled extensively throughout the country to implement projects and programs under the Japan/PNG bilateral and co-operation partnership agreements. This year, 2024, marks 50 years of the establishment of the PNG/Japan Economic Co-operation which also covers various other bilateral and economic co-operation programs between the two countries.

The outgoing Ambassador has invited the Governor-General to attend the Osaka Expo 2025 that will be held in Osaka, Japan, beginning in April to October 2025. Papua New Guinea has been invited to participate in Osaka Expo 2025. Ambassador Nobuyuki served as Japan’s Envoy to PNG since December 2021.
