Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan is proving unstoppable at the box office, outpacing Salman Khan’s Sikandar with staggering numbers. The Malayalam action thriller continues its reign, leaving Bollywood’s Eid release struggling to keep up in this fierce box office showdown. New Delhi: The box office is on fire, and two major releases—Salman Khan’s Sikandar and Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan— are battling it out for supremacy.
While Sikandar stormed into theatres just ahead of Eid, L2: Empuraan has been making waves despite controversy. Salman’s Sikandar, directed by AR Murugadoss, kicked off its theatrical run with a solid Rs 26 crore (India net) on Day 1, according to Sacnilk.com.
The film recorded an overall 20.95% occupancy in 2D and 22.96% in IMAX 2D, with the highest audience turnout in Chennai (46.
67% in 2D and a massive 68% in IMAX). Sikandar box office collection Trade analysts predict that if word-of-mouth remains strong, Sikandar could rake in Rs 40–45 crore on Sunday and Eid. However, the film faces pressure to beat Tiger 3’s Rs 43 crore opening.
Despite Salman’s massive star power, he has yet to deliver a Rs 500 crore blockbuster. While the film is off to a promising start, piracy is already causing concerns. Reports suggest that Sikandar has been leaked on illegal platforms, including Telegram.
This could dent its box office potential, as free downloads and unauthorised streams continue to plague the film industry. The Malayalam action drama has crossed Rs 50 crore at the Indian box office in just five days, despite political backlash and proposed voluntary cuts.
Globally, it has shattered records, nearing Rs 150 crore in gross collections and becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film overseas. However, the film’s earnings have fluctuated. After opening strong with Rs 21 crore, its daily collections have dipped, with Monday’s figures estimated at Rs 44 lakh.
Sikandar vs L2: Empuraan On Day 4, L2: Empuraan saw an impressive 75.26% occupancy for its Malayalam release. In contrast, its Telugu and Tamil versions had lower viewership, with 17.
22% and 25.02% occupancy, respectively. The Hindi version struggled with just 10%.
On the other hand, Sikandar had strong occupancy across major cities, especially in IMAX screenings, where Chennai and Bengaluru led the charge. Right-wing groups have criticised the film over alleged references to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
