There are many messaging apps available right now, and most of them offer end-to-end encryption (E2E), making your sent and received messages more secure from prying eyes. WhatsApp is the largest messaging app in the world right now, but in political circles, Signal is the app of choice, especially for US President Donald Trump.Signal is the government’s choiceAccording to reports in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, Trump and his allies heavily favor the Signal app.
In fact, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency coordinates its activities over Signal. The app is increasing in popularity. Data from Sensor Tower shows that app downloads of Signal in the US during the first three months of 2025 are up 16% compared to the previous quarter and 25% compared to the same period in 2024.
The US government isn’t alone in using Signal. In 2020, the European Commission encouraged staff to use the app. However, the app isn’t without its controversies.
One of Signal’s benefits is its support for E2E. This makes conversations more private, which unfortunately also means that criminals, such as drug dealers, have relied on the app to conduct their illegal activities.Signal vs WhatsAppLike we said, many messenger apps offer E2E as a standard feature.
However, there is more to E2E than just encryption. For instance, WhatsApp is the largest messaging platform in the world, according to data from Statista. Its active users vastly outnumber Signal, but because of its affiliation to Meta, a company known for harvesting and selling user information, not everyone is comfortable using it for secure conversations.
While WhatsApp has no monetization in place, like paying a subscription, neither does Signal. However, Signal is run as a non-profit and is funded through donations and grants. This means it doesn’t need to use your data to make money.
Signal also collects the bare minimum of user data. It only collects your phone number and connection timestamp, whereas WhatsApp collects more. This includes information about your device, contact list, usage stats, and more.
Signal is more simple compared to WhatsApp. It has less features, which means that WhatsApp is “better” for regular users. However, if you’re looking for more privacy, it’s not hard to see why Trump and his allies and other governments are relying on Signal.
