SHREVEPORT, La. -The 42nd annual Holocaust remembrance service was held Sunday afternoon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Thursday was Yom HaShoah, which is Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Shreveport-Bossier community holds a service to recognize the lives lost. Guest speaker was Kathy Kacer, the child of Holocaust survivors.
Kacer said about 100 Holocaust survivors are passing away each month and this generation will be the last to be able to speak and learn from the survivors. Each year 11 candles are lit to honor the 11 million people who died. "There are not many Holocaust survivors left in the world.
We don't have any in this community at all. There are children and grandchildren of people who survived the Holocaust. But with them gone and with the numbers around the world decreasing every day, it's more important every year to actively remember," said North Louisiana Jewish Federation Executive Director Barbara Joseph.
Winners of an essay, poem, and art contest were also recognized..
