You may have heard about Wreaths Across America , a nationwide initiative, in which volunteers lay a wreath on a veteran’s grave to symbolize respect, remembrance, and gratitude for their sacrifices. For a small price you can make a big difference.

You can sponsor a veteran’s wreath for just $17 , and designate if it is in honor of or in memory of a loved one who served in our armed forces. Or, you can sponsor a wreath and the organization will designate a recipient among the millions of heroes. The local initiative is sponsored by the Shreveport Garden Study Club and the Colonial Dames.

The deadline to sponsor a wreath is Nov. 27. You can also attend the local ceremony at 11 a.

m. on Dec. 14 at Greenwood Cemetery, 130 East Stoner Avenue in Shreveport.

That day, there will be more than 4,600 participating locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad. Volunteers and attendees will place wreaths throughout Greenwood Cemetery, pausing at each grave site to recognize the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform. The Wreaths Across America initiative aims to ensure that every veteran’s name is spoken and every life is celebrated.
