The stage is set for magic, mystery and musical mayhem in Summerville as the Flowertown Players unveiled its 49th mainstage season. From fairy tale parodies to gripping murder mysteries, the new lineup promises something for every theatergoer. “This season is one of our more diverse yet,” said Patricia Cullinane, president of the board of directors at Flowertown Players.

“We’re bringing beloved classics, hilarious adaptations and heartwarming stories to the James F. Dean Theatre stage.” The five-show season starts this summer with Shrek the Musical, which runs Aug.

8-24. Based on the hit DreamWorks film, the musical features music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. Audiences can expect a lively retelling of the ogre’s journey with familiar characters like Donkey and Princess Fiona — and a lot of laughs along the way.

Actors with the Flowertown Players perform a sneak peek from the upcoming 2025-26 season during the Season Preview Extravaganza at the James F. Dean Theatre in Summerville on March 29. The new season features five mainstage productions.

Mystery fans will get their fix in the fall with Murder on the Orient Express, a stage adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic, penned by Ken Ludwig. Running Oct. 17-Nov.

2, the play follows famed detective Hercule Poirot as he solves a murder aboard the legendary train. For the holidays, the theater will stage A Seussified Christmas Carol (Dec. 5-21), a whimsical twist on the Charles Dickens classic.

The show, written by Peter Bloedel, reimagines Scrooge and company through rhyming couplets and zany Seussian flair. In the new year, audiences can expect a more introspective tone with The Spitfire Grill: A Musical, running Jan. 23-Feb.

8, 2026. The show, by James Valcq and Fred Alley, tells a story of redemption and community in a small-town diner. The season closes with cult favorite Little Shop of Horrors (May 1-17, 2026), a darkly comedic musical by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman about a hapless florist and a man-eating plant.

To celebrate the upcoming season, the Flowertown Players hosted a Season Preview Extravaganza on Saturday, March 29, at the James F. Dean Theatre with live performances and sneak peeks from all five productions starting. The event also offered theatergoers the first chance to purchase season tickets before they went on sale to the general public April 1.

“We’re thrilled to invite the community to this special night,” Cullinane said about the preview. “It’s a fun way to experience what’s coming and to support local theater.” Season subscriptions and additional details are available at www.
